*the following information is from from the school stats-sheet which I was given upon notification of placement, courtesy of the Kyoto Prefectural Board of Education:

"I. General Information
Sonobe High School is originally one of the oldest high schools in Kyoto and was founded in 1887 as a municipal elementary school and changed into a senior high school in 1985. It stands on the site of a castle. The original castle gate still remains today and is used as an entranceway to the school. In 1991, a new course, the International Culture Course, was introduced to produce internationally aware students. In 1998 the Special Academic Course was established to create more international and open-minded students. This course has two kinds of classes: Global Communication and Social Welfare Awareness Class."

"III. Additional Academic Information
Sonobe has a Special Academic Course which consists of Global Communication Class and Social Welfare Awareness Class. The Global Communication Class is aimed at developing leaders of the upcoming global age. Students' learning focuses on English communication and the broad knowledge and understanding of international affairs. The Social Welfare Awareness Class is aimed at developing specialists in the field of social welfare. Students' learning focuses on the understanding and practical techniques of social welfare."
